Few facts about "compressed plot"

How long does it take to boot?

It takes around 4-5 minutes to boot but you must disable pcie device booting in bios. Otherwise it simply wonā€™t boot.

AMD might be behind in computing, and it should have some trade-offs but, and I know this is nothing for many of you, itā€™s also behind in price.
For example, a 3060 I might get it for ~ā‚¬300+, RX6600 for half of that. Itā€™s very similar cards in terms of performance but 3060 had a much bigger market share and with that comes higher price.
I donā€™t care about brands, I care about cost/performance, and the RX6600 seems like a much better investment than a 3060.
So yeah, I would appreciate if AMD was supported from the start.

I used what I hadā€¦reused old stuff. I always wondered why so many people waste money on something that takes 10 years to repay.

My strategy behind itā€¦if Chia fails, I will offer 700 TB of porn

One can still liquidate everything with maybe 30% losses.

I aimed for efficiency/density.

2x IBM M1015 + 2 Intel expandersā€¦300$ for 48 drivesā€¦USB hubs was gamble for me.

Can $10000 builds a 1PB harvester?

main issue with AMD is drivers  Computing is not bad if it works. Capture One RAW editorā€¦Ryzen 9 5950X or RX 6800 XTā€¦both same performanceā€¦spitting 50+ MPx every 10s. nVidia may do it for 8s, and 2-3x higher price.

They use OpenCL though. nVidia is king of computingā€¦AMD is fighting on too many fronts.

nVidia is stable choice for all CAD/CAM workstations.

AMD drivers are part of Linux, in many cases you donā€™t even have to install, and working pretty well on Windows too.

Thatā€™s all fun and all, but I donā€™t see how double the price for 10%-15% more performance is worth it.

Not sure if you notice, but we are in a Chia forum, not on a CAD/CAM forum, no one cares about that here.

All slow steps, and right now that card is not on the list that I know of (maybe in the works)
And the title of this is ā€œFew facts about compressed plotā€ So thereā€™s the why on video cardsā€¦

If you know somewhere where you can buy large capacity HDDā€™s for something like $ 5,-- per TB, then yes. But I would say that is vey unlikely

If you do find it, let me know

what are you had a bear or two? :pinching_hand: :index_pointing_at_the_viewer:

yeah ā€¦ i know ā€¦ iā€™ll buy ā€¦ iā€™ll buy ā€¦ but you know with every itereation itā€™s farer and farer from regular farming dedicated home workstation. 256gb realy? 12gb of vram? should i quit my job now? joking :vulcan_salute:

and yet chia is no more for JUST users. who knows where it will lead ā€¦

If you buy a rtx 1070 8gb, re-plot your farm then sell it again will cost you $30 or so.

Same goes for a sever with 256GB of ram. Buy it, plot with it, sell it. might not cost anything at all if you do some good budget shopping.

how about not buying anything and just replot with your current setup despite of speed of reploting

also fine, will just take longer (and cost more electicity, GPU is more efficiĆ«nt), donā€™t know what size farm you have or wat plotting hardware.

But personally I donā€™t want to spend 15 weeks or so replotting my farm so I am going with the option above.

lol, Iā€™m completely with you. One could even buy another 2-3 drives instead of piles of ram and a GPUā€¦ not worth it for the small farmer to pivot on this one. Iā€™m in until the disadvantage is too great, then Iā€™ll move on to another project + message board to stink up :beers:.

how do you store those plots if writing to HDD takes 4-12 minutes?
