Great guide for getting started with Chia plotting - NUC Small Form Factor Chia Plotting Build

These guys are running a great site overall, and are pumping out high quality content weekly. I used the above guide to get started with my own NUC, so thankful they put this together.

Who else is running a NUC?

hi there! I’ve just bought the components to run this build. I hope by next week I will be plotting with it :man_farmer:

Yeah Chia Decentral has very good info, highly recommend their site

Wow, I will keep this setup in mind,

I kinda don’t agree with this guide. I think you should have both drive slots filled, but plot on the OS drive as well – so you are maximizing disk throughput!

You certainly want to lean heavily on the NVME drive, but there’s no reason you can’t run at least one single solid plot on a quality SATA drive as well and it takes some load off the NVME. I shared my data in another topic, but the diff between NVME and SATA SSD isn’t as extreme as you might think… here’s me pulling data off that exact NUC:

3 parallel plots (4t/16gb) on C (Samsung 980 Pro 2tb)

Total time = 27467.401 seconds. CPU (151.020%) Sun Apr 18 21:15:04 2021
Total time = 27544.028 seconds. CPU (150.330%) Mon Apr 19 05:01:34 2021
Total time = 27601.239 seconds. CPU (150.320%) Mon Apr 19 12:48:57 2021

Total time = 27156.710 seconds. CPU (151.170%) Sun Apr 18 21:22:52 2021
Total time = 27544.135 seconds. CPU (150.410%) Mon Apr 19 05:15:49 2021
Total time = 27525.685 seconds. CPU (150.290%) Mon Apr 19 13:02:08 2021
Total time = 27525.685 seconds. CPU (150.290%) Mon Apr 19 13:02:08 2021

Total time = 27388.754 seconds. CPU (148.540%) Sun Apr 18 19:06:47 2021
Total time = 27907.464 seconds. CPU (148.000%) Mon Apr 19 02:59:42 2021
Total time = 27554.102 seconds. CPU (147.810%) Mon Apr 19 10:46:09 2021
Total time = 27536.900 seconds. CPU (147.720%) Mon Apr 19 18:32:24 2021

average of all those is 27523 or 7.6 hours

2 parallel plots (4t/16gb) on D (Samsung 860 Pro 2tb)

Total time = 30266.360 seconds. CPU (136.280%) Sun Apr 18 15:09:03 2021
Total time = 29424.961 seconds. CPU (138.180%) Sun Apr 18 23:27:54 2021
Total time = 29531.789 seconds. CPU (137.420%) Mon Apr 19 07:48:30 2021
Total time = 29601.570 seconds. CPU (135.920%) Mon Apr 19 16:10:07 2021

Total time = 29739.423 seconds. CPU (137.030%) Sun Apr 18 19:00:37 2021
Total time = 28950.625 seconds. CPU (141.850%) Mon Apr 19 03:11:31 2021
Total time = 28618.631 seconds. CPU (143.410%) Mon Apr 19 11:16:56 2021
Total time = 29236.633 seconds. CPU (141.370%) Mon Apr 19 19:32:38 2021

average of all those is 29301 or 8.17 hours

so 8.17 - 7.6 = 0.57 hour or 34 minutes per plot – that’s how much better a NVME drive is versus a SSD.

(I regret putting so much memory in this machine, 64gb was definitely a waste, go with 32gb!)

I am not plotting fast enough, so I’ve got 2 of these nuc builds on order… will make sure to run a plot on the boot drive too.

On top of that we all should have mentioned the 40gbps thunderbolt 3 port… no contest vs the 6gbps sata port…

That doubles your I/O bandwidth, easy, and you have enough CPU where that matters @ 6c/12t.
