Plotting in RAM: the speed drops strongly and consistently after the first plot

Hello everyone. I am plotting k32 in a 439 GB RAM disk (512 GB in total, running at 2666 MHz) on a dual-processor system: 2 x AMD EPYC 7601 (each 32 cores / 64 threads, but the second processor is disabled, because RAM is installed only for the first one). The Supermicro H11DSi-NT motherboard.
I found a problem: the first plot takes about 60 minutes (which is also quite a lot), but the speed of subsequent plots in the queue gradually and greatly decreases: 69, 93, 120 minutes, etc.
If you plot one plot at a time, then the speed does not drop, but it is inconvenient. Has anyone got this problem? Below I give the log file:

Your speeds are way off for that system.
you should get like 10 minute plots with bladebit
I can create plots with 2x xeon 2680v2 + 128GB ram in 26 minutes (madmax)

You need to state complete system specs for any reasonable assistance with your issue(s). Most I can say from your post is I’m sorry, your times truly are terrible, not just bad, they are awful. There are probably several reasons, but no one will have any idea from your just posting logs.

Here is the specs:

Memory is five Samsung 64 ГБ DDR4 3200 МГц DIMM CL21 M393A8G40BB4-CWE modules and 3 Samsung 64 ГБ DDR4 2933 МГц DIMM CL21 M393A8G40MB2-CVFBY modules, but 7601 supports only 2667 MHz, so the difference between the modules should not affect the speed.
OS is Windows 10 Pro.

Random thing to check but how hot is the RAM getting?

Couple thoughts>

  1. Assuming Z: is you RAMDisk, re-format it with 64K allocation size. You could try a run with only this change.

  2. Instead of this ./chia_ploter/chia_plot.exe -f x -c x -n 7 -r 64 -K 1 -u 256 -v 256 -t Z:\ -d D:
    use this > ./chia_ploter/chia_plot.exe -f x -c x -n 7 -r 30 -K 2 -u 256 -v 128 -t Z:\ -d D:

If that helps, fine. Of course, MadMax and BladeBit are the only plotters worth using.

  1. If no success with that, there may be inconsistencies with mixed memory modules, might do some testing there with only one or the other.

I would still remove that not used CPU.

Is the z: drive RAM or rather some other drive?

You need 247 GB RAM drive for one MM instance (or 110 GB if you want to back it up with NVMe). Maybe also remove the extra RAM, and try with 256 GB only (you will have uniform RAM).

Your MM advertises as v0.1.5, download v0.1.6 from the link provided.

As suggested, download HWMonitor, and check your temps. It really looks like your box is temp throttling (CPU, RAM, NVMe - if that is your z: drive).

What is your Task Manager saying about CPU, z: usage? Few snapshots would help.

Do you see anything in the Event Viewer (timeouts, disconnects)?

From my experience, MM is not really boosting crunching threads priorities, so it is safe to use all what you have. Actually, my best results are when I overbook number of logical cores/threads. Reducing threads by 1/2 is really needed with BB only.

Comparing your results for same phases (e.g., p2/p3), some results are basically the same, but kind of every other line is getting big penalty. I still think that the problem may be due to temps. However, one can assume that once temps will stabilize, the whole phase would get a hit, not just every other line. Just a wild guess.

Also, I have a dual Xeon v2 box, and couldn’t make it run when I had 2 CPUs in the box. The minute Win 10 Pro saw that other CPU, the p1 was 4-6x slower (never bothered to finish, as one CPU was faster than two). At the end, I switched to Linux (what others suggested) and all things sorted out nicely.

Yes, Z: is the RAMDISK. C: is a NVMe disk (only for OS) and D: is a hard drive (destination).

It can be seen that one RAM die heats up much more than the others (up to 72 degrees Celsius), maybe this is the case? What is the normal operating temperature for RAM?

Yup, that one stick looks like is either busted, or lost contact to the heatsink (if it has one). Try removing 4 sticks, so that one will be also removed. Hopefully, that will cure the issue.

It really depends how much air you dump on it. My DDR 3 run at max 60-62C, but I had to add extra fans to blow on it. Without that, it was pushing close to 80C or so. DDR 3 may run hotter, as it is more power hungry, so needs more air flow comparing to DDR4.

I have never looked at any RAM specs, so really cannot answer that. Although, one thing is a melting temp, and another throttling (if it can do that), or basically timing out - what would manifest in much longer access times (not so much crashes / data corruption, but rather long access times).

Yes sir, mark that Dim and look at it close for heatsink issues and relocate it to a different slot and rerun your test and see the error follows the dim. Move Dim 10 to Dim location 0

It turns out interesting with this dim: I swapped it with another similar one, in a new place it also warmed up more than others, but already a little less (up to 70 degrees). Then I completely removed it and then the dim that was paired with it began to warm up (up to 70) , I also removed this second one, 6 remained, and still one of the dimms is hot (up to 70), which means that the most intensive data exchange occurs with it during plotting. And by the way, there are no heatsink on memory.
