You probably won’t believe it until someone like the farmer in the picture tells you.
prob 400 pib and he’s only number two rank.
and again, discussing whether chia farming is still profitable was not the purpose of the post

believe what?
some kid wasted parent’s money on losing project? There are poor like that.
What is purpose of post? sharing common disillusion?
Where did I say ANYTHING about using 1 TB drives.
BTW - IT or Computer Hardware Tech for over 2 DECADES - hard drive power usage DOES vary a lot, anywhere from 6W to 12w+ over the last decade alone, and often NOT related to capacity.
And that $20000 UP FRONT cost you cited vs my REAL WORLD under $10,000 more than makes up the electric usage for a very long time - probably longer than the drives will survive.
When you are working on YOUR OWN FARM, you pretty much ARE working for free. Plus you are citing insane levels of labor cost in any event - and hint, I’m RETIRED, I don’t have a “real job” and haven’t had since before Chia existed.
How the heck you come up with “Europe is sponsoring the USA” I don’t get at all - you folks have almost ZERO defense budgets, yet you STILL manage to have insane tax levels.
No, I’m not happy with my bullshit, but since I’m not spouting it as TRUTH I don’t have any need to “explain” it. But it does appear you BELIEVE yours is truth, despite having been shown your BS IS NOT REALITY.
And for reference, the largest scale farmer I know of can EASILY run their farm on their own. Why are you ASSUMING “you need to pay the guy”?
10PiB effective IS NOT LARGE SCALE, that’s at most MEDIUM scale and about 5 machines worth of farm.
No, PV is not free - the up-front cost makes it MORE EXPENSIVE than I pay my PUD per KWH. I can picture it being cheaper at EUROPE power rates, or some of the higher rates in the US. But my PUD charges one of the 3 lowest rates in the USA.
No, BB stats don’t need “compensation”, Chia farming ALSO runs drives 24/7 but doesn’t use a lot of “active data transfer” time. Very similar usage in fact.
You’re starting to remind me of why I disowned my late Father - he had his world view, and you could present facts to him all day long without changing his views at all, even when his views contradicted fact.
darling if you live in 3rd world countries I understand your whining about high salaries
Lets say you live in Swiss, the capital of crypto. As IT monkey you get like 7-20k/month.
10PiB alone rig is like 150k CHF just HDDs. 10PiB will earn you now like 70 XCH * 12 XCH. You get barely 1000 CHF per month. You will die in Switzerland. It is not enough even for Germany, Austria.
I lived in rented room in Scotland for 400 GBP back in 2010. The usual ROIC in bussines world is 5y for IT crap. you need to earn at least 7000 CHF/month just to survive , and repay rig in 5 years.
5 years ROIC was last tim with XCH @ 40+ USD. These times are gone, and most likely never come back with recent CNI fuck ups.
That is why there are no businesses farming. The legendary BackBlaze gave up on CHia farming idea when XCH was 100$ or so. They did simple math, and they have all.
Backblaze, IN PART, gave up on the idea because they saw they were going to have occasional issues with “changing their rigs over” from Chia to their normal multi-level ECC setup, and the excessive level of work involved in running Chia than clearing the rigs and installing their backup control software.
Might have been a smaller part than the “can’t make enough from Chia to make it wothwhile” part, but given that their main location at the time was in an EXPEN$IVE ELECTRIC COST area (San Francisco Bay area)…
